This month PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) has officially launched the Grand New Fortuner VN Turbo or Grand New Fortuner VNT. This version is around Rp 10 million more expensive than the old version but comes with the latest diesel engine which has more power, greater torque and better acceleration. The most visible different from the outside is the Turbocharger air vent on top of the hood of the car.
The Grand New Fortuner VNT Intercooler is equipped with the new 2 KD-FTV Variable Nozzle van Turbo or the VNT which replaces the old 2KD-FTV. This IL 4Cyl, 16 Valve DOHC can generate power up to 144 ps at 3400 rpm from 102 PS/3600rpm with torque of 35.0 kgm at 1600-2800 rpm from 26.5kgm/1600 – 2400. All of that improvement comes from the VNT technology as the engine is still has a 2.5 liter capacity and can still do around 15 km/liter.
The VNT enriches the oxygen going into the combustion chamber resulting in a better combustion. This additional oxygen required for this process is sucked from the outside through an air vent.
Turbocharger usually consists of compressors that suck and push air into the combustion chamber. The compressor has the same shaft with the turbine. When the turbine spins, the compressor is also spins sucking the air from the outside while the turbine is driven by exhaust gases from the engine.
Regular Turbocharger requires a strong turbine spin which can only happen when you have a sufficient amount of exhaust gas from the engine, or in other words, normal Turbocharger can only be effective at high rpm.
VNT however, is equipped with adjustable turbine blade which angles can be optimized depending on the engine load. The blades are powered by an electric motor. This allows the VNT to be activated at lower rpm.
At low rpm, when the exhaust gas pressure is still weak, the blades are closed so that the exhaust gas is flowing in a narrower area which automatically increases the pressure that allows the compressor to work. At high rpm, the angle of the blades is opened to avoid the pressure that can damage the turbo.
Apart from VNT, the Grand New Fortuner VN Turbo is pretty much the same with its predecessor. Some minor face lift are at the outer mirror with turning signal lamp, head lamp design, radiator grille, engine hood front bumper, fog lamp, front fender and over fender, corner scoop and of course the hood scoop for the diesel version.
The Grand New Fortuner VNT is available in 5 speed manual transmission or 4 speed automatic transmissions with shift gate type. The car is 4,705 mm long, 1,840 mm wide and 1,850 tall with the ground clearance of 220 mm.
Interior is colored Greige with the dashboard the same color as door trim and floor console. The Instrument Panel Color is black wood grain and the combination meter has reader for Optitron, Analog Speedometer & Tachometer, Digital Tripmeter and Odometer. There is 2 DIN audio video systems with 6.1 inch touch screen and 6 speakers. It also has DVD, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity. The high end version has a parking camera at the rear to help reversing while parking.
The Grand New Fortuner VNT is available in six different color which are silky gold mica metallic, silver metallic, black mica, dark grey mica metallic, dark steel mica and super white II. This VNT version is only available for diesel with TRD and normal style.
