If there was ever a car that really built with Indonesian user and for Indonesian road condition in mind it really is the Toyota Avanza. Now with the more expensive new Avanza Veloz, will it adds even more value to what already the best seller car in Indonesia?. Note that all Avanza sold now looks similar to Avanza Veloz so this is really a comparison between the old Avanza model (referred to as Toyota Avanza) and the New Avanza Model (referred to as Avanza Veloz)
Toyota Avanza is good, has excellent fuel consumption and can carry plenty of passengers. All of this is because the design and production process that happened in cooperation with Daihatsu which been Toyota affiliates since the dawn of time, involves a lot of Indonesian engineer and experts.
Toyota Avanza which means advance in Italian was positioned to become an affordable people carrier. Toyota Innova which replacing Toyota Kijang which was the ultimate people carrier is leaning more toward MPV which by nature is more expensive and no longer represent value for money as well as higher fuel consumption.
Toyota Avanza was first introduced in Gaikindo Auto Expo in 2003, however, Astra as the Sole Distributor for this brand has previously worked very hard to create a buzzword by issuing commercials on papers and television mentioning the name Avanza without ever showing what its actually look like.
These campaign has successfully creates brand awareness. During the first year only it sells more than 100,000 units across Indonesia. Avanza position has not been beaten in term of number of unit sold even by Jazz which has been Honda main arsenal. Avanza is also assembled in Malaysia and sold to Thailand, Philippine, South Africa and even as far as Mexico.
In 2011, Toyota sold more than 162,000 unit of Avanza in Indonesia and also took the stage as the most sold car in that year. The second position was taken by none other than Daihatsu Xenia which is almost identical to Avanza at 66,000 units.
Compared to the Toyota Avanza, the Avanza Veloz, really improved in terms of aerodynamics and the raw look of the car exterior. The main A, B and C pillar stays the same but that’s about it. The two horizontal lines at the front grill provide the distinct Toyota looks and give a more luxury appearance. The radio antennae however can still use some improvement.
From the engine, Avanza Velos is still powered with the same 1.5 liter IL, 4 Cylinder 16 Valve, DOHC VVT-I that powers the Toyota Avanza G 1.5. The dimension is also the same at 4,140 mm long, 1,660 mm wide and 1,695 mm wide as well as 200 mm ground clearance. So basically only the exterior and few options that change kind of like radical face lift. The fuel consumption is still stands at 13 to 15 km / liter depending on the traffic. The fuel tank can carry 45 liter of gasoline fuel. Avanza Velos is available in 4 speed automatic transmission and 5 speed manual transmissions. Basically there is no different in the engine department between Toyota Avanza G 1.5 and Avanze Veloz.
For interior, again Avanza Velos shows it superiority over Toyota Avanza. The room is significantly more spacious. The dashboard is a little bit narrow giving more leg room to the driver and the first row seat. The most improvement is actually at the second row seat which is noticeably larger. The third row is still the same, however, because of the round back door design, Avanza Velos has more space for your groceries in the back.
Avanza Veloz interior is colored black and grey as oppose to Avanza beige and grey. The interior which includes its dashboard, steering wheel and seat, are all black and grey. The three spoke steering wheel has silver audio button and has tilt steering and steering switch for various size driver. The Audio is an Integrated 2DIN CD AUDIO, AM / FM. MP3 with silver paint completes with 6 speakers (4 only with Avanza) installed throughout the interior. The new designed with LCD Digital combination meter and Multi Information Display spits out information such as fuel consumption, range taken and average.
As for the price, the most expensive model is the Avanza Veloz 1.5 Automatic Transmission at Rp 183 million, the next one is the Avanza Veloz 1.5 Manual Transmission at Rp 173.4 million while the top of the line Toyota Avanza priced at Rp 167.4 million.
