Not many people know but the Mazda BT 50 is actually the second best seller Mazda car in Indonesia just after the Mazda 2. But the fact is Mazda BT 50 just don’t have the tough look offered by its nearest competitor and everybody knows, for the car that cost that much, even if it being used in a mine or plantation site where no one can see, it must have the look that matches.
Enter the New Mazda BT 50 Pro. This car has it all, the MZ-CD 2.2L In-line 4 Cylinder, DOHC, 16-valve Direct Injection Diesel engine now has the style to match all that power. The New Mazda BT 50 Pro comes with 2 types for single cabin, the 4 x 4 and 4 x 2, 4 types for the double cabin, all 4 x 4, and one freestyle 4 x 4 which is one and a half cabin option.
The 2.2 liter engine is much smaller than what’s available else where but it probably was selected by Mazda to reduce tax liability that hit car above 2.5 liter. However, the 2.2 liter turbocharger with Variable Nozzle Turbocharger (VNT), provides sufficient power which are 150 PS (110 kW) @3.700 rpm and 375 Nm @1.500- 2.500 rpm and all with a more fuel efficiency at 13 km / liter.
The top of the line which is the Mazda BT 50 Pro Double Cabin 4×4 High 6 with automatic transmission cost Rp 100 million more than the top of the line Mazda BT 50 Double Cabin 4×4 Mid. However, the improvement more than justify the cost as the old BT 50 was powered by MZ-DE 2.5L In-line 4 Cylinders, SOHC 12-valve Indirect Injection Diesel.
Comparing apple with apple, Mazda BT 50 is smaller at 5,169 mm long, 1,807 mm wide and 1,762 mm long compare to the Mazda BT 50 Pro at 5,365 mm long, 1,850 mm wide and 1,821 mm long. The pro version also has a higher ground clearance at 237 mm. The tank can hold 80 liter of diesel fuel.
From the outside, the Mazda BT 50 Pro offers a more sporty body design. Including a curve front lights which follow the curve of the front grille, bulgy all four fenders which give the sporty appearance. Its exterior styling echoes Mazda’s passenger car range, and ditches the more typical work-truck styling in favor of sleeker lines. The intent is to avoid the boxy looks which plagued the old model. The ladder chassis feels strong and extensive measures to cut noise and vibration boost interior comfort.
The interior is as roomy as a medium size SUV and clad in black and silver combined with decorative elements in some parts such as door trim, floor console, shift knob, parking brake button, door handles, climate control louvers, meter rings, and dials. The top of the line has a leather steering wheel, gear shift knob and trimmed seat.
It also has a 4 way manual adjustable driver seat with lumbar support and 2 way manual adjustable front passenger seats. The back seat is spacious and more than comfortable enough for two adults, and the cabin’s width means three people can easily sit across the rear bench.
